ImageA new ‘line of figures’ seems to have appeared, only difference is these are made of paper and arrive to you flat-packed ready for you to assemble, ‘GraPhig paper craft’. Hatsune Miku, no.001 (very appropriate), was the first GraPhig to be released back in 2011. Now, in 2013 the count currently stands at 212 with little sign of slowing down.

The figures themselves require no glue, sticking or cutting to assemble, the sections simply slot together hassle free. When I first saw images of the GraPhig’s online I wasn’t overly impressed and dismissed it as ‘expensive paper’. However, seeing recent images from the GraPhig exhibition where the whole paper craft collection was displayed together, it really caught my eye! Perhaps they simply look more appealing/less out of place when displayed as a group? Either way seeing all the different characters lined up in their neat little rows, with their funny square heads was a treat for the eyes. Their out of proportion features and chibi style, make them seem almost like nendoroids, except larger, less expensive and made of paper.. And everyone loves nendoroids (or should anyway).

The standard retail price for 1 x GraPhig character seems to be 630 Yen, so roughly £4.40. Which on the outset seems like a fairly reasonable price. Although cheap, international shipping costs will greatly effect the price, as on most online stores there is a set shipping minimum fee for weights from 0 – (a number definitely more than the weight of flat packed paper). Normally this is fine for heavier items, but if you do decide to buy one or more of these, it may be best to combine more things to the order to raise the weight and justify the shipping costs.

Overall, GraPhig paper craft figures look both cool and cute, I think I may have to check out the fuss and get one (or two) myself 🙂 ‘there’s no way paper can be this cute’!
